His father was a member of the legacy and knew derek's father, winston. he watched winston become corrupt and as a result didnt want his son involved in the legacy. he never told his son about the legacy or what they did. from a young age matthew exhibits a very high iq. he studies many things but his passion is religion, and he earns a theology doctorate from The Roman University. he joins the research and teaching profession at SFU, where he meets derek. derek meets the new professor and determines they have much in common. when matthew mentions to derek that his father worked for the philanthopic group, luna foundation, derek delves farther and finds out matthew's father was a former legacy member. matthew is brought into the legacy workings, and slowly becomes a full house member. unbeknownst to matthew, his father was corrupted and gave matthew a genetic predisposition to being possessed, he is targeted by the dark forces and eventually is overcome by evil.

appraoched by a demon, in the guise of a legacy member, matthew is convinced derek is turning to the dark side. the legacy member tells matthew he has psychic abilities but can work best through dreams. he asks matthew to allow him access to matthew's dreams [and the dream world through them] so that he can get to derek and stop derek from turning further.

instead of derek however, the demon begins to manifest in others' dreams, killing them. [per dream] the legacy is called to investigate, and the demon continues to convince matthew that the true enemy is derek and derek must be stopped.

his evil nature begins to manifest in his dreams and unconcious mind.

soon matthew begins to clue pieces and realizes its himself that has committed the crimes. the demon no longer hides himself in the dreamworld, and actively takes over matthew's mind. when he knows himself to be the evil, he begins to act lawful evil during the waking hours.

as his progression to the dark continues, he becomes more chaotic evil, until his actions are totally random. he seeks the final key from julia.

matthew is exorcised of the demon, but remains lawfully evil. He is reminded of his oath to the house and agrees once more to be bound to the house.
